Journey from relaxed to natural hairDChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05152950804655005577noreply@blogger.comBlogger17125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8906445393476670079.post-44881088689704547492014-03-21T18:46:00.000-07:002014-03-21T18:46:08.275-07:00I Bought Curl formers!!!So I just bought some curl formers :-) I have been interested in them, mainly in how they work because they are definitely more weird than any other typical hair curling device. But I decided to look them up on Amazon and found them for a steal! <a href="http://www.amazon.com/TSSS-Curler-Ringlets-Leverage-Stretched/dp/B00HD6EU4G/ref=pd_rhf_ee_p_d_5" target="_blank">40 curl formers</a> for $14!!! I don't know the pricing well on these things, but from what I could see from my quick internet search and a quick comparison of different eBay and Amazon sellers, this was the best deal ever. Others were selling 24 pieces for $12 (half the amount for only $2 less), or 10 pieces for $7 (7x4= $28, so more expensive). I bought 2 packs of 40 from the seller TSSS because a reviewer said that she needed 70 for her head, and to be safe that the seller won't run out or raise the price.<br />
<br />

<img alt="" class="a-dynamic-image a-stretch-vertical" data-a-dynamic-image="{"http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51wOipq0D0L._SX466_.jpg":[466,466],"http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51wOipq0D0L.jpg":[500,500],"http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51wOipq0D0L._SY450_.jpg":[450,450],"http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51wOipq0D0L._SX425_.jpg":[425,425],"http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51wOipq0D0L._SY355_.jpg":[355,355]}" data-old-hires="" height="320" id="landingImage" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51wOipq0D0L._SX425_.jpg" style="max-height: 415px; max-width: 415px;" width="320" /></div>
<br />
In case you don't know much about curl formers, this is the description from the TSSS Amazon seller's product page (uncorrected);<br />

I have only seen 1 video of the process, by my hair idol, Youtuber <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/Naptural85" target="_blank">Naptural85</a>. I watched it long ago so I don't remember what she did, but by the looks of it it seems like you stretch the curl tubes, and use the included hook to put your hair through. Then you just let the tube close and curl, molding your hair in the spirally shape of the tube. The hook part seems a bit complicated, but I'm hoping that being a crocheter will work to my advantage in this aspect. We shall see.<br />
<br />
Anyways, I will be sure to post my attempt in the future. Until then, here is the video I watched.<br />
<br />

<br />
So I just rewatched this video and the brand name curl formers were $70 for a pack of 40! So this is much MUCH cheaper. Hopefully they will work just as well, I will keep you posted.DChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05152950804655005577noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8906445393476670079.post-61504629838688591952014-02-21T20:56:00.004-08:002014-02-21T21:15:57.881-08:00Hairstyle: Puff, High Ponytail <div class="mobile-photo">

It has been a little over a year since I last relaxed my hair (6 months wearing it natural). I figured it was time for the moment of truth. I should try to put my hair into a puff, see how close I am to reaching my goal length. Puff length has been my goal length because I hate wearing my hair out and a puff is good enough for me in terms as pulling my hair back. Guess what? I can do it! My hair fits into a puff!</div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
Actually my hair goes into a puff much better than I expected. As long as my hair doesn't resist being stretched I don't even need to worry about clipping up stray pieces! I probably could have started wearing a puff 2 month ago (but using clips).</div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
To get my hair into a puff I tie my hair up into an almost puff, kind of pineapple the night before. I use a wrap (made from the leg of tights that I cut) tie it loosely around my head starting at the very very edge. I then gradually tighten the knot as I pull the wrap into a high ponytail (pineapple). This stretches and prepares the hair it to sit in puff position. It also helps keep the un-puffed part smooth. Then I put an additional satin scarf around my edges to keep them smooth as well. I leave the puff part out to keep it from getting too smashed.</div>
<div class="mobile-photo">

<div class="mobile-photo">

<div class="mobile-photo">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
Then to make the puff I can simply take off the night scarves and wrap a more decorative one around the puff, and tighten as much as I want to (without going so tight that pieces start falling out of the puff). If you're hair isn't as smooth as you'd want (like on days 2+), I add water (or some liquid hair product) and pudding or gel, brush the hair towards the puff, and then put the wrap around it. I mostly used thin scarves to wrap but ribbon and even shoe laces also work well. The key is to use something long enough to wrap around and least twice so that everything is contained, and you can pull as tight as you choose to (careful not to give yourself a headache) and then tie it. I often tied it into a bow, but sometime just a knot. You can also choose to tuck in the leftover pieces from the tie. And don't forget to fluff your puff. Obviously the style is called a puff, so you want it puffy! I usually simply fluffed it with my hands.</div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
*I prefer to put in whatever hair products that I'm using (pudding or
gel work best to keep the puff in place) in my hair the night before,
that way it will dry in place by the time I get up and make the scarf switch even easier.</div>

I've been using Lustrasilk Curl Max hair products on my natural hair for a few weeks so I will give you a review. I have 3 products from the line; twisty curly spray, curl activator moisturizer, and curl pudding.</div>

The gel turns into a lotion when you rub your hands together, which means a little can go a long way. <u>My Review:</u></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
I used all 3 products together on my damp, just cowashed hair. After a few minutes, before my hair was even dry, I really did notice that the products brought out curls. I had a super curly afro!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--DciB1bwXlQ/UvcJcX3UMzI/AAAAAAAADCQ/Ywz-TmJQjQw/s320/IMG_20140208_233350-721091.jpg" height="320" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5978257413404635954" width="269" /> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NHLpQMNSYYs/UvcJZQ7hbjI/AAAAAAAADBY/n3Q3vjI2x-w/s320/IMG_20140208_234317-709427.jpg" height="320" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5978257360003624498" width="258" /> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dcszYT0hpB0/UvcJbwg7_ZI/AAAAAAAADCE/PQWeLuL0EAw/s320/IMG_20140208_233923-719098.jpg" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5978257402841791890" /></div>
<br />
There is no strong hold though, so once you sleep on the curls they'll never be the same. My hair didn't feel dry and it was soft and fluffy. Being that I tend to wear "fluff and go" types of hair styles, I found this product to be great for that purpose since my hair was soft instead of stiff (as with gel). That being said, ecostyler gel still gives me better, tighter curls, but they are hard and stiff.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
Pictures above are the day after using the product (I washed my hair the night before, used the product, air dried and slept on my curls, then styled the next day). I don't think it's as curly as before since I slept on the curls, but I still looks more like puff of mini curls as opposed to just an afro puff.<br />
<br />
The second day looked pretty similar as well...<br />

</div>
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
Some days, if I had a few extra minutes, I used the spray, or both the spray and moisturizer in order to help with my hair fluffing. Using the products really made my puff even bigger so, dare I say it, the two seem to help stretch the curls pretty well after sleeping on it (which compacts and shrinks afro hair dramatically).</div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
The pudding seems to be the most necessary aspect of really defining curls. I tried once using a generous amount of all 3 products (on freshly washed damp hair). Generous, as in more than I probably should have used (my hair was dripping product), but got this nice well defined curly 'fro (from the pictures above).</div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
And I tried again using small amounts of the products (my hair was just damp with product), and didn't notice very defined curls. </div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
<u>Warnings: </u><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
- Be careful with the amount of pudding you use, it looks milky white in the container and it will look milky white in your hair if you leave globs on.</div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yn4ayBsYiy0/UvcJevGMVRI/AAAAAAAADDE/18zqVUpxPS8/s320/IMG_20140208_233256-730442.jpg" height="320" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5978257454000788754" width="256" /> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rBzFSSrB93s/UvcJW6QW9DI/AAAAAAAADAo/maeoXY3y6VE/s320/IMG_20140208_234156-799523.jpg" height="320" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5978257319557264434" width="249" /></div>
Notice the white globs, my hair is damp now but when it dried you could still see the globs. Wipe the excess off!<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
- Don't add ecostyler gel unless you want your 'fro to look like a dandruff filled, dirty bird's nest hot mess! Seriously, don't do it! <br />
<br />
I tried to "freshen up" my puff by adding water and gel (because I had no time to wash my hair). I think it looked good the first day, the gel brought out new curls and all. The next day when fluffing my puff I noticed gel residue coming out so I made a mental note to wash my hair when I got home (because I hate residue). When I got home and looked in the mirror I noticed white residue everywhere! All up in my puff, all in the rest of the slicked back portion of my hair, everywhere! My hair was basically gray because of the white residue mixed with my black hair. It was sick! And because I rarely look in the mirror I didn't even notice it all day! Hopefully no one else did either because no one said anything to let me know that my hair needed help. Uck! I digress, the moral of this story is</div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>LUSTRASILK PUDDING + ECOSTYLER GEL = GROSS RESIDUEY HAIR</b></span></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: left;">
<u>Conclusion:</u><br />
<br />
I like this line of products. <br />
<br />
Lustrastilk Curl Max spray, moisturizer, and pudding didn't dry out or harden my hair, but kept it soft. It did define my curls but didn't really hold them after they've been smooshed. The spray and moisturizer are useful for helping to stretch and puff my hair out. As long as you don't try to mix the product with gel and don't leave big clumps of product in your hair, there will be no residue. <br />

I love Ariana even more now 1. for being so honest 2. for saying the word ratchet. Ratchet just makes things funnier.</span></span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img alt="Ariana Grande at the Y100?s Jingle Ball 2013 on Dec. 20, 2013" src="http://assets-s3.usmagazine.com/uploads/assets/articles/69801-ariana-grande-explains-hair-extensions-natural-hair-looks-absolutely-ratchet-/1390425513_ariana-grande-467.jpg" /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the article, she basically says that due to all of the chemical coloring and hot tools that have been used, her natural hair a hot mess. Therefore, she had to try other options in order to make her hair look good. Wigs didn't look good on her (in her own opinion), but she likes the look of extensions, so she is sticking with it. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In her role on Victorious as Cat (she was my favorite) she bleached her hair in order to dye it red, which basically killed her hair (although the color was FAB)!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img height="640" src="http://i2.listal.com/image/4430924/600full-ariana-grande.jpg" width="453" /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I think most of us know by now that all races (not just black people) wear weave/extensions/clip ins/ hair pieces or whatever else you want to call them, so this admission is not a big shock. It's a little bit interesting that she openly admits to the extensions though, because not everyone does that. But it's seriously ridiculous that Ariana Grande is actually being hated on for wearing weave! REALLY? Who cares? What's it to you (haters)? Grow up! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ariana Grande's hair is seriously a big deal right now. There are articles on the <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/502246/ariana-grande-defends-her-hair-extensions-my-actual-hair-is-so-broken-it-looks-absolutely-ratchet" target="_blank">E! <div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There is even an article titled <span style="background-color: white;"><b><i>Ariana Grande Fires Back at Hair Haters, Explains New Weave: "Gimme a Break",</i></b></span> on the <a href="http://www.cambio.com/2014/01/20/ariana-grande-fires-back-at-hair-haters-explains-new-weave-dying-cat-valentine-damage-weave/" target="_blank">Cambio website</a>, so she obviously has gotten many hair complaints... <b><span style="font-size: x-large;">STOP IT! </span></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ariana Grande is awesome, let's not try to pick on her for such stupid reason as her hair choices. What exactly is the problem with how she wears her hair? Is it harming someone? Please calm down, haters. It's just hair, she can do what she wants.</span></div>

<img height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-55SksBrTsag/UtBDoMw5QiI/AAAAAAAAC0E/L7rWlnKsWc0/s320/IMG_20140110_135741-712079.jpg" width="265" /></div>
<br />
Remember the hair style that enables big hair to fit under a hat? <a href="http://bringonthefro.blogspot.com/2013/12/quick-style-2-week-hair-part-1-hat-hair.html" target="_blank">Quick Style, 2 Week Hair Part 1: Hat Hair, Bump and Twists</a>. Well after a week the twists start looking a little rugged. Instead of simply taking out the twists and doing a whole new style, use the twists for a twist out! <br />
<br />
The night before, make the front section (that was previously used for a bump) into two flat twists (recall the directions for the left section of hair in part 1). The next day, take all the twists out and you have a flat twist out that looks nice and twisty!<br />
<br />
It really does stay twisted enough to look cute all week without the need to rewash/style!<br />
<br />
Day 1<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Oit6vy1CnRA/UtBEExPp_PI/AAAAAAAAC28/2k_xYRlNrVE/s320/IMG_20140110_132916-727593.jpg" height="400" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5967344354995076338" width="325" /></div>

<div class="mobile-photo">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pYvQwMMmdj8/UtBEBens2UI/AAAAAAAAC18/yAFvkjDHI4E/s320/IMG_20140110_134022-713509.jpg" height="400" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5967344298456045890" width="300" /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
</div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
<br /></div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
Curls are pretty well defined, especially at the roots. As you can see, more fluffing and separating is needed on the side so the parts from the flat twists aren't so visible.</div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
<br /></div>
Day 2 hair<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E7y7gXwAQVE/UtBEAC8Hy8I/AAAAAAAAC1o/YCIlzaP69h4/s320/IMG_20140110_134253-708632.jpg" height="400" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5967344273845636034" width="255" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PpCMamtJ86o/UtBEC1ddzwI/AAAAAAAAC2U/350L7j708PY/s320/IMG_20140110_134336-719323.jpg" height="640" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5967344321767001858" width="468" /></div>
<br />
I brushed my hair back so it looks slicker in the front and still curly in the back. Made sure I got rid of the parts this time.<br />
<br />
As the days go by, and the look gets less and less defined, I pull my hair into a further back puff. Even with less defined curls, the hair is still clumped together in a dread type curl pattern and stretched more than naturally, so I think it's cute.<br />
<br />
Day 5 hair<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5rPD1uKrD28/UtAso1BrdDI/AAAAAAAACzU/Rekd1KipoRM/s1600/1beige2.jpg" height="372" width="400" /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bcXBMt4Phpw/UtAsokEADhI/AAAAAAAACzY/9YaIzpDC7W4/s1600/1beige3.jpg" height="372" width="400" /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tQnysY10FKY/UtAsp8NjiGI/AAAAAAAACzg/caWNogzy92M/s1600/1beige7.jpg" height="640" width="468" /> <img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MwOJEzXXWs8/UtAsomZ6AuI/AAAAAAAACzQ/QEuZBLOwL7o/s1600/1beige56.jpg" height="640" width="436" /></div>
<br />
See, the twist out really lasted a week! <br />
<br />
I did my twa version of a pineapple every night. Use a satin band around your edges to slick them back (or fold a square satin scarf into a band and tie it around) leaving your ends free while you sleep (on a satin pillowcase of course). That way the curls don't get too smooshed and last longer.

I finally did my hair! I've been wearing various headbands for most of the 5 months that I've been natural and avoiding doing my actual hair. Since I noticed that I've been getting closer and closer to being able to wear a puff without adding 3 headbands and 10 tons of gel (to keep all short pieces held back), I've been wearing a bump in the front and having the rest pulled back via headband (see my <a href="http://bringonthefro.blogspot.com/2013/12/go-to-quick-and-easy-hair-style-pouf.html" style="color: #843ba5; text-decoration: none;">Go To Quick and Easy Hair Style: Pouf Puff</a>).</div>

Part neatness and perfect twisting don't really matter because most of the twists are covered. Use a moisturizing spray and satin scarf nightly (it helps slick back the hair). Twists can last a week, bump needs redone every couple of days (unless you use a super hold gel). Easy!<br />

Part 2, Week 2 coming soon.</div>

<img height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pPZNxrL1nYk/Uo-nRfOIEHI/AAAAAAAACo8/xGffNuqonXg/s320/IMG_20131009_153552_833-781081.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<br />
I probably said this before, but I don't like wearing my hair just out. I didn't like it out when it was relaxed, and I don't like it out in an afro. So I've been wearing headbands, which if thick and tight enough (because my hair is short), pulls my hair back out of my face enough to where it's not looking like a definite afro circling my face. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PayeXjpvQVU/UqukHjLAJeI/AAAAAAAACrY/Bua_ujgg7eo/s1600/IMG_20131213_185655-781834.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PayeXjpvQVU/UqukHjLAJeI/AAAAAAAACrY/Bua_ujgg7eo/s320/IMG_20131213_185655-781834.jpg" height="400" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5957035381735040482" width="282" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xYwkBOVynRs/UqukFHYHvKI/AAAAAAAACrM/3pECVHkRaVE/s320/IMG_20131213_185243-771840.jpg" width="251" /><img height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OZZVFY9iYqw/UqukEOMp36I/AAAAAAAACrA/ahh78yihtac/s320/IMG_20131213_185925-767438.jpg" width="217" /></div>
<br />
Now that my hair is a few months longer, I am able to do a little more (in terms of styling) in order to pull my hair back out of my face area. My new go to style is a pouf puff. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4AthRcWnYPk/Uo-nQ5vqj6I/AAAAAAAACow/XTUcOHvUmCI/s320/IMG_20131105_172202-779279.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4AthRcWnYPk/Uo-nQ5vqj6I/AAAAAAAACow/XTUcOHvUmCI/s320/IMG_20131105_172202-779279.jpg" style="text-align: center;" width="296" /></a></div>
<br />
I pick up some hair on top of my head, make a pouf, and bobby pin it in place.<br />
<br />
Next, I brush back my left and right side, and pin them in place.<br />
<br />
Then, I put on a headband or head wrap, to bring the afro puff down a notch or two.<br />
<br />
Done!<br />
<br />
If you use gel to do your hair and scarf your hair up at night, the front pouf will stay good for days. Just add a headband and fluff the back puff daily.<br />
<br />
Easy! <br />

So I bought a BUNCH throughout August. I realized I need products for curly hair now that I'm natural and may actually be able to tell if they do anything to enhance my (teeny tiny kinky) curls. I will give quick first impressions on the things that I've tried already. Without further ado, here's my massive ridiculous hair product (I'm definitely a junkie) haul...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r-v4gWVQZHU/Ug1OCMOIbII/AAAAAAAACaU/9lMxxR2a8lY/s1600/IMG_20130815_171911.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r-v4gWVQZHU/Ug1OCMOIbII/AAAAAAAACaU/9lMxxR2a8lY/s1600/IMG_20130815_171911.jpg" height="401" width="640" /></a></div>
Collective photo of what I thought was going to be all of the hair products I would buy. I was WRONG!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RNyvySaBw_8/Ug1OCafhrzI/AAAAAAAACaY/Xf_vxm6khOw/s1600/IMG_20130815_172016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RNyvySaBw_8/Ug1OCafhrzI/AAAAAAAACaY/Xf_vxm6khOw/s1600/IMG_20130815_172016.jpg" height="292" width="640" /></a></div>
I got these headbands from Burlington Coat factory for $2.99 and $3.99 a piece. There is one gold and one tarnished silver two layer studded headband, a tarnished silver chain headband and a silver two layer headband with a black plastic flower with a crystal in the middle. I only like buying metal headbands because plastic ones break (my head's too big). Since I don't like wearing my hair straight T.W.A. out, I am always wearing some type of headband, and I can never have enough.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mkTGUxiEACw/Ug1OCeLNmEI/AAAAAAAACag/DXdhb3Z1ymQ/s1600/IMG_20130815_172210.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mkTGUxiEACw/Ug1OCeLNmEI/AAAAAAAACag/DXdhb3Z1ymQ/s1600/IMG_20130815_172210.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Anti Shrinkage Knot Out Conditioner and Dr. Miracle's Daily Moisturizing Lotion: I basically got these for free from CVS because I had CVS extracare card extrabucks that I needed to spend. I am saving the conditioner for if I ever get knots or matts, and I just got the Dr. Miracle's because it was cheap and it will be useful for the heavy duty winter moisturizing routine that I will be starting in order to avoid any hair damage (like I got last winter). Oh I will be P.O.P.ping and L.O.C.ing, spinning and flipping and whatever else is necessary to avoid the damage I got last winter (yes I am traumatized for life, see my transitioning length checks <a href="http://bringonthefro.blogspot.com/2013/06/decision-made-im-going-natural.html" target="_blank">here </a>and <a href="http://bringonthefro.blogspot.com/2013/08/final-length-check-damage-and-big.html" target="_blank">here </a>for the horror that was my damaged hair).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kHAv6E3Fq5Y/Ug1OC6CjQOI/AAAAAAAACao/3h471wwSeZs/s1600/IMG_20130815_172901.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kHAv6E3Fq5Y/Ug1OC6CjQOI/AAAAAAAACao/3h471wwSeZs/s1600/IMG_20130815_172901.jpg" height="640" width="488" /></a></div>
Lustrasilk Curl Max Twisty Curly Spray and Curl Pudding: I used these two products one time so far, together on freshly washed damp hair. I didn't really notice a difference in my curl but I didn't get super frizzy once my hair was dry. A downfall is that the curl pudding leaves some white residue if you put too much on, but uh, just don't put too much on! One good thing is that my curls definitely stay soft using these products, the argan oil in their recipe probably help with that. When my hair is longer and the curls are more visible, then maybe I'll be able to tell more specifically what else this product does for my hair. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H7feV-Hjdt4/Ug1OC70Y5lI/AAAAAAAACa4/RbUf5gYX6Fk/s1600/IMG_20130815_173229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H7feV-Hjdt4/Ug1OC70Y5lI/AAAAAAAACa4/RbUf5gYX6Fk/s1600/IMG_20130815_173229.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream and Coconut Curling Cream: I also used these two together on freshly washed damp hair. They work similarly to the Lustrasilk Curl Max products as far as I can tell, but I like the texture of them better, they feel creamy as opposed to Curl Max's liquidy lotion feeling. But I still got the same results as Curl Max, saw no drastic curl formations, hair was very moisturized, got white residue because I always end up putting too much on. I should mention though that the white residue from both brand of products is not serious, no emergency hair wash is necessary, you can just dust any visible residue out of your hair easily. <br />
<br />
With Curl Max, I chose their curl spray and curl pudding, with Cantu I got two different curl creams. Both creams seem similar in texture and smell. They likely work the same way and therefore don't need to be used together (like I did). Again, I'll try to get a better review on these products when I get more hair and can see more curls other that those on the front part of my head (darn this twa).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kmc36InKKmo/Ug1ODeJoC2I/AAAAAAAACaw/nxiCTi-F0og/s1600/IMG_20130815_173548.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kmc36InKKmo/Ug1ODeJoC2I/AAAAAAAACaw/nxiCTi-F0og/s1600/IMG_20130815_173548.jpg" height="486" width="640" /></a></div>
Tresemme Naturals Moisture (with aloe vera & avocado extracts) and Smooth (<span>with coconut oil & jojoba extract)</span> Conditioners, and Alberto VO5 Moisture Milks Conditioner in Passion Fruit Smoothie and Strawberries & Cream: I got all these for cheap with Rite Aid rewards bucks, I just wanted them for cheap co-washes since I've heard many naturals rave about them. So far I've only used the Strawberry VO5, it works fine.<br />

Hawaiin Silky Miracle Worker 14 in 1 and Do Any Way You Want It: I haven't used these together yet, but I had the 14 in 1 a few years ago and still remember how soft and moisturized it made my hair.<br />
<br />
Palmer's Olive Oil Formula Moisturizing Hair Milk and Hair Pudding: I used both of these products on my freshly washed damp hair. I like this pair the best out of the 3 that I've tried. Not because I noticed anything spectacular, but because of it's ingredients (no mineral oil or petroleum). The hair milk is a lotion and the pudding is like a creamy green gel. I feel like this had the most hold of all 3 but it was a soft hold, my hair was moisturized all week with just the one application of product!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IigeKb-Xqac/UjInHLBX6oI/AAAAAAAAChI/nw_qJjuGzwQ/s1600/august+hairprod+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IigeKb-Xqac/UjInHLBX6oI/AAAAAAAAChI/nw_qJjuGzwQ/s320/august+hairprod+2.jpg" height="640" width="616" /></a></div>
Hollywood Beauty Tea Tree Creme: I got this again with CVS extrabucks, so it was basically free. I plan to use it as the creme for winter time L.O.C. method-ness. It was only $3 and change, and is a bonus size with 40% more! I love Hollywood Beauty products so I figured I'd try this creme.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pGQ9WzF5kDQ/UjInHIFEU4I/AAAAAAAAChc/NBnBxEk5irM/s1600/august+hairprod+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pGQ9WzF5kDQ/UjInHIFEU4I/AAAAAAAAChc/NBnBxEk5irM/s320/august+hairprod+3.jpg" height="640" width="620" /></a></div>
Organix Hydrating Teatree Mint Shampoo and Conditioner: I had this set a few years ago and liked it, so since it was on sale for buy one get one free at Rite Aid (keep a lookout in the ads because BOGO happens fairly often) and the store happened to have these 50% more free bottles, I got the set.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AnVgrI1-ZE4/UjInHCzm1TI/AAAAAAAAChM/5TdAu3BPFU0/s1600/august+hairprod+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AnVgrI1-ZE4/UjInHCzm1TI/AAAAAAAAChM/5TdAu3BPFU0/s320/august+hairprod+4.jpg" height="640" width="504" /></a></div>
Marc Anthony Strictly Curls Stretch and Styling Foam: This brand was also buy one get one free at Rite Aid and I saw this Stretch stuff that supposedly loosens tight curls and wanted to try it (eventually). I got the Foam to try too since it's a different type of product to try. I have other Marc Anthony products that I like (curl lotion, curl cream, split end sealer, straight lotion, straight blow dry serum) so I was interested in trying other products from the brand. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hCP0IU3LOVU/UjYrresvT3I/AAAAAAAAChw/rD02ze_LYdA/s1600/august+hairp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hCP0IU3LOVU/UjYrresvT3I/AAAAAAAAChw/rD02ze_LYdA/s1600/august+hairp.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Organix Argan Oil & Shea Butter Curl Enhancing Yogurt: I saw that Organix had this new product for curls during the BOGO free at Rite Aid, and had to get it. I haven't tried this yet but I'm really hoping this product is good since I love Organix shampoos and conditioners (I've tried almost every flavor). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XymS78MGWvQ/UjInHhsg_8I/AAAAAAAAChU/1F6Oo8FS5jw/s1600/august+hairprod.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XymS78MGWvQ/UjInHhsg_8I/AAAAAAAAChU/1F6Oo8FS5jw/s320/august+hairprod.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Curls Coconut Curlada Conditioner and Curly Q's Red Velvet Moisturizing Curl Cream: They were on sale at Target and I have 2 Curls products that I like already (Creme Brulee and the moisturizing spray) so I picked these. The Red Velvet is likely the kids line's Creme Brulee, but is like $1 cheaper. The conditioner has a free sample of Creme Brulee (yay, the more the merrier). I haven't tried these yet.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cFtzhWEs5LY/UjIfjRqknCI/AAAAAAAACg0/ajRxnRmcYaQ/s1600/august+hairproducts+july.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cFtzhWEs5LY/UjIfjRqknCI/AAAAAAAACg0/ajRxnRmcYaQ/s320/august+hairproducts+july.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li>EcoStyler Olive Oil Gel</li>
<li>Organics Olive Oil Twist & Loc </li>
<li>Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Girls Hair Pudding</li>
<li>Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter Curl Defining Pudding </li>
</ul>
I actually got these in July but thought I'd show you anyway. These were the first batches of curls pudding type products I bought. I later wanted to start getting more sets (multiple products from the same line) as you can see with all of the sets of two products in a brand that I purchased above. The Elasta QP is a set as well because I already had the Leave In Conditioner (or Moisturizer whichever is the one in the same size package as the pudding), so I can use them together.<br />
<br />
PHEW. That's all the hair stuff I bought in August (and the last bit in July). I'm officially retiring from buying hair products for a few years, unless I end up loving something I currently have and feel the need to keep using that same product (which is highly unlikely). You may be thinking, Doris, that's not even enough stuff to last you a few years. Ah contraire! This August haul is only to be added on to all the hair products that I already have accumulated. I'll do a post later exposing my ridiculous amounts of hair products and what possessed me to buy them all.<br />

Actually
I kind of forgot til today, but since I'm wearing the same hairstyle as
yesterday, here is a (photo) reenactment of curly hair day!!!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's my go to afro, held back by a scarf that I tyed around my head. I normally try to use some type of gel in an effort to make some curls pop. But since that don't really work (one day I will have visible curls, waaahhh) I just did the L.O.C. method for moisture. I used Sta Sof Fro moisturizing spray, my homeade oil mixture, and Beautiful Curls Shea Butter leave in cream. My hair may be more 'fro than curl, but at least it's soft!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy Wear Your Hair Curly Day @ :-P (the at key is my afro on top of the smiley).</div>

So I was sick to death of dealing with two textures of hair, especially with the relaxed ends being disgustingly DAMAGED. I waited as long as I could, 7 months post-relaxer (transitioned) and Big Chopped on 7/27/2013. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These are the last photos of my relaxed ends.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was my hair wet, looking super sad and stringy. The relaxed ends are so thin, damaged (or gone) that you can clearly see through to my 'fro at the roots. This is just so pathetic looking I hate to even show these pics (burn them all!) but hopefully it's helpful to someone.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OSsxJFsYt1g/UgF5zV07fYI/AAAAAAAACSY/7oeuQj0spj0/s1600/IMG_20130806_165032.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OSsxJFsYt1g/UgF5zV07fYI/AAAAAAAACSY/7oeuQj0spj0/s1600/IMG_20130806_165032.jpg" height="400" width="283" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is my hair dry, luckily looks less sad and pathetic but still DAMAGED. At least there seems to be a lot of new growth.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

The back of my hair just looks like a rat's nest. That was my attempt at parting all the way to separate hair in half. Clearly didn't work. Freaking RAT'S NEST!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

You can do the math and figure that it took about 2 hours to big chop my full head (because half my head took 1 hour times 2 halves equals a whole...).</div>

I did basically the same thing as the day before except for 1 added step. I rinsed my hair, added coconut oil, and then ecostyler gel (olive oil). The gunk in my hair is the gel which had not yet dried.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
From what I can tell so far, ecostyler gel doesn't necessarily define my curls (my hair mostly just looks afro'd, there's random curls in my hair [that I love] but not many, I'm hoping that this is scab hair and after a while all my hair will grow out like the curly bits) it just tames my 'fro.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took these photos, then I totally put on a scarf (tied like a headband) and went to work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So there it is, I now have natural hair! I can't say that I like my twa (teeny weeny afro) on me (can't wait until it grows big enough for a proper puff), but it's definitely much more tolerable than transitioning, and hopefully I'll be able to keep my natural hair much healthier than I could my relaxed hair. I'll keep you posted :-)</div>

There's about half an isle of products, and the isle is long so half of it contains PLENTY. In addition, there's even an endcap full of natural hair products, YAY!!!<br />

***I'll post more from the downtown CVS later...<br />
<br />
These are of the large downtown Pittsburgh and East Liberty CVS locations. Downtown has the most products and end cap (my guestimate, I didn't take any actual measurements or count each different product) but East Liberty has a lot of stuff too. I haven't found any other CVS pharmacies with quit as many as these, so all locations aren't equally as product-centric. But you can usually find some good products in any CVS, just not as big a variety as downtown.<br />
<br />
Also, if you sign up for the CVS extracare card and make an online CVS account, they send you coupons to use specifically with the card (which is a free discount card). So right now they sent me a 30% off entire purchase coupon for use with my card, guess what I'm going to buy? I'm definitely going downtown to get some natural hair products with my 30% off coupon.<br />
<br />
There's some CVS codes at <a href="http://www.retailmenot.com/view/cvs.com" target="_blank">Retailmenot</a> and <a href="http://www.dealigg.com/story-CVS-Coupons-Promotions-1" target="_blank">Dealigg</a>, but they seem to just be for online purchases. I'm not sure how great of a black/curly hair products selection CVS makes available online, but it's worth a look for 30% off.DChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05152950804655005577noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8906445393476670079.post-30589243664107251772013-07-19T15:46:00.000-07:002013-07-19T17:13:04.583-07:00I'm on bloglovin!Here's where you can find me on bloglovin.<br />

<br />
I just found out that Garnia (gotta love the smell of Fructis) has decided to announce a Wear Your Hair Curly Day (caps because to me it's a holiday :-) All those who pledge to go curly will make Garnia donate more money.<br />
<br />
Simply go to <a href="http://style.garnierusa.com/" target="_blank">Garnia's site</a>, click on Pledge to Go Curly, and you've helped up Garnia's donation for kids to go to rock camp (is that like Camp Rock?) <br />
<br />
No this is not an ad, I'm not being paid***<br />
I'm personally just happy that someone made a Curly Day because I plan on cutting my relaxed ends off and being naturally curly just in time for this August 14, 2013 Wear Your Hair Curly Day. <br />
<br />
See, sometimes you do find good information from clicking on ads, especially at <a href="http://www.naturallycurly.com/" target="_blank">naturally curly's website</a>. Here's a link to <a href="http://youtu.be/Xmj8en_CTdo" target="_blank">another video</a> about it from naturally curly. <br />
<br />
I wonder if they'll give out free curly hair products or announce a natural hair line on that day? Here's to hoping! <br />

***almost 7 months post relaxer, almost time to big chop...DChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05152950804655005577noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8906445393476670079.post-24171324153638560612013-06-28T13:19:00.001-07:002013-06-28T13:54:11.360-07:00Deep condition in public without looking crazySo I was washing my hair and was just about to put in my deep conditioner when I got a text from a friend inviting me out to lunch in an hour. Ahhh!!!! Was my 1st thought, my second thought was, Ain't nobody got time to fully deep condition, then try to tame my mane (which is what my hair really looks like with all this new growth) and get dressed to go in an hour!<br />
<br />
Think think think! So I thought, if I can deep condition while I'm out and then just wash it out when I get home from lunch that'd be perfect! Maybe I can wear an open knit hat (because a closed knit hat in the summer is odd) with a shower cap under it and no one will notice. Furthermore, I can't wear the hat pulled down on my forehead to fully cover all my hair (cuz I'd look weird), I'll need to wear it back some, slouchy style. So hopefully the conditioner will be clear so no one can tell that that is what's on my exposed hair (which means I can't pile the conditioner on as much as usual). These were all my thoughts in trying to make public deep conditioning work.<br />
<br />
Here was the outcome...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4511qxKvQqQ/Uc31yq9GyoI/AAAAAAAACH4/G6ThEl3bmto/s1280/IMG_20130628_154618.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4511qxKvQqQ/Uc31yq9GyoI/AAAAAAAACH4/G6ThEl3bmto/s1280/IMG_20130628_154618.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-palcCXrvYPI/Uc31ynOCPFI/AAAAAAAACIA/_L2kKp-8kzQ/s1280/IMG_20130628_154638.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-palcCXrvYPI/Uc31ynOCPFI/AAAAAAAACIA/_L2kKp-8kzQ/s1280/IMG_20130628_154638.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nXiaznF_ZCQ/Uc31y6ATnLI/AAAAAAAACH8/aH1zA9WpJ7A/s926/IMG_20130628_154705.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nXiaznF_ZCQ/Uc31y6ATnLI/AAAAAAAACH8/aH1zA9WpJ7A/s926/IMG_20130628_154705.jpg" height="640" width="560" /></a></div>
As you can see, I managed to wipe off the white bits of conditioner on the exposed hair, and since the shower cap was clear, it wasn't super obvious unless you tried very hard to see it. The bottom picture has a flash which is why you can see the shinyness of the cap underneath, but even still, that doesn't look crazy at all. <br />
<br />
So actually I think this is a pretty good idea in warm weather (because in cold weather your hair would freeze). You are getting things done or having fun while conditioning your hair, and if it's hot outside, that's just like sitting under the dryer with your conditioner! Good thing I made this hat in many colors, and I will be making more because they are a necessity, especially while transition to natural hair.<br />

It's basically 3 rows of braids with pieces of weave in it for length.<br />
<br />
I used mostly black and some purple Kanekelon hair, my mom did the
braiding. The first time she braided my hair like this she did only two rows of braids, but I figured
with 3 there would be more hair so if I wore it down it wouldn't look as
sparse. <br />
<br />
This took about 4-6 hours to do, only because I'm tender headed so I mad my mom be extra gentle which meant going really slow and constantly using tons of detangler (which I will review later) and the time it took organizing the weave for use. I'm sure this could likely be done in 2 hours on hair without the weave.<br />
<br />
I left them in for 2 weeks.<br />
<br />

I washed and deep conditioned my hair, then applied a leave in liquid, jojoba oil, and let's jam creme gel.<br />
<br />
I twisted up 6 knots around my head.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rZX6r1eBXMQ/UagTp_uJ_oI/AAAAAAAAB_4/YCGx6njmnEA/s1600/2013-04-07+21.09.21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rZX6r1eBXMQ/UagTp_uJ_oI/AAAAAAAAB_4/YCGx6njmnEA/s1600/2013-04-07+21.09.21.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
As you can see, my roots are a crae crae!<br />
<br />
I slept with my satin scarf on my head, and let the knots air dry overnight.<br />
<br />
Voila! It worked-ish.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Lopsided much?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
2 knots weren't fully dry (my hair don't like drying under a scarf or in knots), so 1 side's longer than the other because of the droop of being wet.<br />
<br />
Other
than that, I liked the curls! I wasn't expecting such a super curly
turnout with only 6 knots, but it was good. So now I know to use 6 knots for smaller medium curls, and to alot for the extra long drying time, or do it dry.<br />
<br />
I tried 3 knots on day 3 to try to revive the curls, it didn't quit work as you can see below.<br />
<br />

Maybe it would have worked better if had combed my hair. Clearly my hair looks like a craptastic birds nest.<br />

I'm going natural!!!I recently made a sudden decision to stop relaxing my hair. The reasons are a bit ridiculous so bear with me:<br />
<ol>
<li>I'm to lazy to keep my relaxers up (new growth galore, always).</li>
<li>It's annoying to go through all those steps to have healthy hair, but it still doesn't stop damage.</li>
<li>Seeing all these natural girls' hair grow, because it breaks less, gives me hope.</li>
<li>All the hairstyles I wear with relaxed hair can still be worn with natural hair.</li>
<li>Curly hair is my fav (bigger ones) and with natural hair, you can "twist out" for larger curls.</li>
<li>I rarely wear my hair straight (flat ironed) as is, so why keep relaxing?</li>
</ol>
So I've been scouring the internet for transitioning advice and others at my stage and don't find many. Most are 1-3 years old and the people are full on natural by now, so I am starting my own transitioning/natural African American hair blog. I've calculated that my last relaxer was around Christmas 2012, during my break from school and work so between December 24-January 1. It was likely closer to January because I know I didn't relax on Christmas. So it will be easy for me to keep track since this was the beginning of 2013, WHOO HOO!!!<br />
<br />
Last perm: January 2013 (about), 5 months into transitioning. <br />

Just kidding, this is an (badly) altered pic from the awesomely informative article, <a href="http://blackgirllonghair.com/2013/02/8-ways-to-combat-dry-ends/" target="_blank">8 Ways to Combat Dry Ends</a>. I'm hoping for more defined curls but hey, I'll take her hair too, at least it looks full and healthy.<br />
<br />
As you can see, when I got my hair freshly permed and cut (got bangs and layers) in the summer of 2012, my hair was pretty healthy and nice. Currently it's crap-tastic! This past extra super dry dry winter killed my hair!! Since my hair was in such good shape over the summer, I figured I should continue what I was doing to continue to have healthy hair. Too bad what I actually needed was an even more moisturizing hair routine for the winter. Unfortunately I didn't know of the l.o.c. method until recently. So most of my hair has broken off. Now, since I no longer want to relax my hair, keeping it healthy should hopefully be much easier than it was while relaxed.<br />
<br />
I have no real goal natural hair type because that is out of my control. My main goal for this transition is to have steady hair growth and better hair health. I will be researching hair health galore and hopefully my new knowledge will enable me to keep my hair in the summer and winter. Stay tuned and we shall see...<br />
